INJECTIONS INTO THE BACK

INJECTIONS INTO THE BACK To the Editor:— In The Journal, Aug. 8, page 1768, Schneider and associates reported a tragic case in which material injected into the back in an effort to relieve low back pain had entered the spinal canal and resulted in serious involvement of the nervous system and death. It may be thought that this is a unique occurrence, and for that reason I should like to call attention to the fact that other instances of this kind have occurred. In 1957 we were consulted by a 53-year-old woman who had suffered from pain in her back for four years. In May of that year an injection had been made into her back. Immediately after the last of these injections she experienced severe pain across the lower part of her back that radiated to both legs. Her entire body below the level of the umbilicus became numb. Her legs became weak, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png JAMA American Medical Association
