Infantile Eczema and Systemic Disease

Infantile Eczema and Systemic Disease Abstract ECZEMA IN childhood is distressing to both patients and parents. Beyond this, there is the possibility that eczema may be associated with an underlying serious systemic condition. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the various systemic conditions with which an eczematous process may be associated. Observations Before discussing these systemic conditions, we would like to comment about eczema in general and the causes of eczematous eruptions in children. The term "eczema" (we are using the terms "eczema" and "eczematous process" synonymously) is difficult to define. For the purpose of this discussion, we shall define eczema as an inflammation of the skin characterized clinically by erythema, vesiculation, and scaling, and histologically by intra-epidermal vesiculation (spongiosis). An eczematous eruption is almost always accompanied by pruritus. We realize that this description does not distinguish eczema from dermatitis. We do not believe it is possible to make a morphologic distinction References 1. Solomon, L.M., and Beerman, H.: Atopic Dermatitis , Amer J Med Sci 252:478-496 ( (Oct) ) 1966.Crossref 2.
