Abstract This two-volume treatise gathers together the experience and opinions of many top investigators interested in diseases in which aberrant immunological responses are either proved or suspected. Most chapters contain a good review of the literature and provide excellent references. The emphasis is sometimes more on experimental approaches and mechanisms than on clinical aspects of the disease in question but usually there is enough said about therapy to be of help to the physician who cares for patients. Specific articles or books on therapy will often be needed by the clinician to supplement what is presented in the book. In certain chapters much experimental detail has been presented without relating it to clinical situations or patients and these chapters will appeal chiefly to those intimately involved in research. An example is the chapter on experimental thyroiditis which, incidently, would be much improved by a concise summary.
