Abstract A commonly held belief that specialists are a product of the complexities of modern medicine is probably incorrect. Ancient Egyptian physicians were known to have practiced specialties. Experts on the diseases of the eyes, the lower body or the head dealt with patients during the time of the Pharaohs. An imposing modern monograph of pituitary tumors and hypophysectomy is therefore not too surprising even though it deals with a comparatively restricted subject. This book is an expert and thorough collection of knowledge on the subject and draws heavily on the experience of the authors with the therapy of pituitary tumors. Excellent reviews of the anatomy including the development of the pituitary, the microscopic appearance of tumors and the physiology and biochemistry of pituitary hormones are found. An extensive survey of the hypothalamus, its anatomical, electrophysiological, and hormonal relations to the pituitary gland is also included.
