Abstract HYPOGLYCEMIA is defined as a blood sugar level of 60 mg/100cc or less. In the Massachusetts General Hospital Chemistry Laboratory, quantitative tests for blood sugar average 160 per day. A search was made of these reports to determine the incidence of hypoglycemia. It was necessary to review 26,650 reports to find 50 patients who had glucose tolerance curves showing hypoglycemia. For example, a total of 3,230 reports produced six such cases. This is 538:1. At this rate, in order to find 50 hypoglycemias, one would expect to review 26,900 reports. As stated above, actually 26,650 were required. The daily work mentioned included an average of two glucose tolerance tests every 24 hours (about 1.25% of the total). More specifically, to find 50 such tests reaching 60 mg/100cc or less in any part of the curve required finding about 333 glucose tolerance curves.
