Granuloma Annulare and Amniotic Band Syndrome

Granuloma Annulare and Amniotic Band Syndrome Abstract To the Editor.— Granuloma annulare (GA) and amniotic band syndrome (ABS) (the triad consisting of placenta denuded of amnion, fetal entanglement by amniotic remnants, and fetal malformations),1 are uncommon conditions that have not, to our knowledge, previously been reported to occur in the same patient. We report such an association. Report of a Case.— A 17-year-old female with congenital bilateral asymmetric brachydactylia of the hands, diagnostic of ABS2 (Fig 1), had developed recurring nodules, 1 to 2 cm in diameter, on both feet (Fig 2) at the age of 13 years. A biopsy specimen interpreted as consistent with subcutaneous granuloma annulare (Fig 3) was confirmed by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. Currently, four years after the biopsy, nodules persist on the lateral aspect of each foot. Neither GA nor ABS has been noted in any of the patient's relatives. Comment.— Amniotic band syndrome is believed References 1. Heifetz SA: Strangulation of the umbilical cord by amniotic bands: Report of six cases and literature review .
