Forfar and Arneil's Textbook of Pediatrics

Forfar and Arneil's Textbook of Pediatrics The fifth edition of this British textbook seems a shade less excellent than the fourth, despite having the expected new material on genetics and molecular biology. I have approached reviewing the book by concentrating both on sections where I am knowledgeable and current and on those where I have only cursory knowledge. I found the physiology and diagnostic sections to be first rate, if occasionally couched in rather dense language. An exception was the section on rickets and metabolic bone disease, which was in the chapter on bones, joints, and connective tissue and also briefly in the chapter on nutrition. Here the discussion was barely adequate and the treatment recommendations for metabolic bone disease were almost 40 years out-of-date. For most conditions, treatment is not given much space and often will not be helpful to the reader. In sections that I read to improve my knowledge, I was pleased and usually satisfied that I had learned something, although again, treatment is given short shrift. The chapter on practical procedures is excellent and is a feature not currently found in major US pediatric textbooks. Beginning residents will find this particularly useful. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine American Medical Association
