Essential thrombocytopenia or morbus maculosus werlhoffii has its onset, as a rule, during the school age period. Finkelstein1 states that the disease usually has its onset at from 6 to 10 years of age, and that its occurrence in infancy is extremely rare; indeed, he makes no mention of the disease in his textbook.2 Griffith3 writes that the disease is uncommon in infancy and is most often seen in children after the age of 3. Lucas4 mentions no age limit. Hirschfeld5 states that the disease has its onset in the school age period and often somewhat later. Schilling6 makes no mention of the age at which the disease may begin. Giffen and Halloway7 review twenty-eight cases in which splenectomy had been performed, the youngest patient being 2½ years of age.
