Endophthalmitis Caused by Petriellidium boydii

Endophthalmitis Caused by Petriellidium boydii Abstract Fungal endophthalmitis is an increasingly common disease entity. Predisposing factors most frequently cited include parenteral hyperalimentation catheters, severe burns, long-term administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics, and immunosuppressive therapy, especially high-dose corticosteroid therapy.1Candida species, especially C albicans, are the most prevalent of the fungal organisms associated with endophthalmitis. We report a case of fungal endophthalmitis caused by Petriellidium boydii, a fungus more commonly associated with cutaneous mycetoma. To our knowledge, this is the first reported instance of P boydii endophthalmitis in the pediatric literature, and the third case ever reported.
