Abstract The passing of Dr. Coates as Chief Editor and the inauguration of a new Editorial Board and Chief Editor is an appropriate time to present editorial policies for the Archives of Otolaryngology. The Trustees of the American Medical Association have voted to limit the tenure of appointment of members of the Editorial Board to 10 years each. This rule will apply to the new appointments but will not be retroactive to members of the Editorial Board appointed before the rule was made. By staggering the appointment of new members to the Board, continuity will be assured. The Chief Editor is appointed for a period of 2 years with the possibility of reappointment for a maximum of 10 years.
