Drug Effects on Ciliary Muscle and Choroid Preparations in Vitro Abstract The muscular effects of pharmacological substances on isolated iris preparations have been reported by Wessely,1 Poos,2 and many others. However, similar experiments with isolated ciliary muscle preparations have failed. Poos encountered technical difficulties and did not pursue the matter further. Meesmann3 compared the relatively easy task of obtaining preparations from the isolated iris with the "almost hopeless" endeavor to obtain similar preparations from the ciliary muscle. In a previous report, we briefly mentioned an in vitro method of studying the effects of drugs on the ciliary muscle of the cat, using segments of the ciliary body4 (henceforth referred to as ciliary muscle preparations or ciliary muscle strips). The present investigation attempts to compare drug effects on similar preparations of ciliary muscle and choroid, obtained from several species.
