Dr. Kelly of Hopkins, Surgeon, Scientist, Christian.

Abstract With Miss Audrey W. Davis' biography of Dr. Kelly we now have biographical evaluations of the Big Four at Hopkins. Though one could hardly expect this biographical achievement to be of the same order as in Harvey Cushing's "Life of William Osler," Dr. Kelly is seen through the eyes of a close friend, admirer, and advisor. The book radiates the warm perception, admiration, and affection which only close association can bring. The subtitles of the book, "Surgeon, Scientist, Christian," define the aspects of life in which Howard A. Kelly found his richest realization. In so many things in his life, Kelly's timing was excellent, and often he was most fortunate in "the breaks." Medically he came on the scene just when the whole development of modern gynecological surgery was beginning. He was one of the original faculty physicians and teachers at the new and revolutionary Johns Hopkins Medical School.
