Diseases of the Skin: Mercurialis, 1572 Abstract A CATALOGUE of old books offered Mercuriali, Geronimo. De Morbis Cutaneis et Omnibus Corporis Humani Excrementis Tractatus. Small 4to, old vellum, (old repairs to margins of first 4 leaves). Venice, apud P. & A. Meietos, 1572. First Edition. Very Scarce. . . . "The first systematic text-book on diseases of the skin"—Garrison-Morton 3980.1The title page (Fig 1) reads as follows: Essays on Diseases of the Skin and All Excrements of the Human Body, with copious references to numerous and diverse doctrines, useful not only to physicians but also to philosophers, carefully compiled from the words of the most illustrious physician, Hieronymus Mercurialis, and arranged in five books by Paulus Aicardius, with authorization and privilege. Venice, Paulus and Antonius Meietus Brothers, Publishers, 1572.The motto of the publishers' emblem reads, "Eat not the fruits of untruth." The table of contents (Fig 2) lists chapters on diseases of the skin of the head References 1. "Almost" has undergone attrition, through the generosity of the many scholars upon whom I have intruded, until it now refers to one proper name, Laitus, whom Mercurialis quoted as an authority for the view, which he emphasized, that dew is injurious. His other authorities were Plutarch (it may cause lepra) and Seneca (it may cause vitiligo and the scabby disease). Since "dew" meant plant exudates as well as condensed water, this may be Mercurialis' sole reference to contact dermatitis. 2.
