Diagnosis of Tuberculous Pleurisy by Culture of Pleural Biopsy Specimen Abstract Pleural biopsy cultures for tubercle bacilli, performed on specimens from 63 consecutive patients with exudative pleural effusions, grew out Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the tissue of 16 patients. Twenty-one of the patients in the study were eventually proved to have tuberculous pleurisy. The rate of positive pleural biopsy cultures in proved cases was, therefore, 76%.
