Abstract Thirteen authors contribute individual chapters dealing with the fundamentals, the molecular-biologic aspects, the diagnostic problems, and the skin manifestations of drug allergies. Various diagnostic test methods are interpreted and their limitations explained. Besides patch and intracutaneous tests newer laboratory test methods, such as the lymphocyte transformation test, the basophil and mast cell tests, and Hoigné's two-step method are described in detail. It is pointed out that the latter tests are of limited diagnostic value in contrast to skin tests and clinical methods. It is also emphasized that in spite of increasing experience in the recognition of drug allergies their exact diagnosis represents one of the difficult problems in modern medicine. This compilation of articles gives a good and critical outline of all available methods for the diagnosis of drug allergies.
