Abstract Since Wilson's1 presentation of the cases dealing with the granulomatous lesions produced by Trichophyton rubrum, a great deal of interest has been rejuvenated in the study of this organism. In the past two decades a number of bizarre and perplexing cutaneous lesions have been caused by T. rubrum, such as the deep-seated infection of the neck reported by Harris and Lewis2 in 1930. In this case they were unable to demonstrate the organisms in the biopsy material by using a methylene blue stain; however, their cultures were positive. Cremer3 reported 15 cases of follicular inflammation of distal portions of the legs in which the organism was found to be in an endo- and ectothrix position. These lesions appeared almost exclusively in women. Wilson was able to show the fungus elements in the granulomatous areas of the corium as well as the hair shaft. References 1.
