Cowdry's Arteriosclerosis: A Survey of the Problem In 1933 Cowdry's book on arteriosclerosis had a considerable impact on almost everyone interested in cardiovascular disease. It also helped establish a comparatively new and increasingly important type of medical publication, the monograph written by a group of experts in a single field. Now 34 years later a second edition of this outstanding book has just been published. In many respects this second weightier volume is a worthy successor to the initial one and in others, through no fault of its own, a considerable letdown. The new edition retains the same broad spirit of inquiry, the same impartiality towards conflicting viewpoints and, in fact, many of the same authors or their immediate successors have contributed to it. Its pathological discussions in the main are excellent, detailed, and well illustrated. This in itself makes the book unique.
