Controlling Diabetes With Diet. This article is only available in the PDF format. Download the PDF to view the article, as well as its associated figures and tables. Abstract Controlling Diabetes With Diet was written primarily for the person with diabetes mellitus who is able to interpret a dietary pattern in terms of daily meals. Although written for the diabetic patient, it would be useful for anyone needing to follow a low calorie diet. The material is organized in a logical progression of ideas of the problems faced by the diabetic patient and presents the control of diet as the common denominator regardless of whether treatment of the disease does or does not include the use of insulin or drugs. Menu planning is presented with the use of meal patterns and uses the exchange lists developed jointly by the American Dietetic Association, American Diabetes Association, and Public Health Service in 1956. Modifications of the basic exchange lists for changes in type of dietary fats and of texture are given.
