Comprehensive Planning of Health Facilities and Services The Council on Medical Service and its Committee on Medical Facilities over the past several years have been engaged in extensive studies and educational activities to support voluntary areawide planning. At the 1962 Clinical Convention, the House of Delegates adopted a resolution supporting voluntary areawide planning and urged medical societies and individual physicians to cooperate and provide leadership in the formulation and operation of regional planning bodies. In November 1964 the Council on Medical Service sponsored the first national conference on areawide planning and subsequently published Proceedings of that conference. To further encourage physicians' involvement in health facility planning, the AMA Department of Hospitals and Medical Facilities published in 1965 "Areawide Health Facility Planning—Suggested Guides for Physician Participation," as well as "Profiles in Planning," the AMA directory of health facility planning agencies. In addition, numerous articles have been written and published in journals and newsletters.
