Abstract Growing interest of late in the function of the thyroid gland and its relationship to endocrine disorders has so aroused interest in pathologic processes involving the gland that I was prompted to translate from the German an original paper dealing with one hundred cases of chronic inflammation of this gland. The cases under discussion formed the basis for a thesis prepared under the personal supervision of Prof. Dr. F. de Quervain, director of the surgical clinic at the University of Bern, Switzerland, who will vouch both for the accuracy of all figures and for all statements quoted in the text. The material which Prof. de Quervain placed at my disposal comprises one hundred cases of chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland.
