Abstract "The emigration of granulocytes, macrophages and lymphocytes into inflamed or injured tissue is one of the most fundamental events in pathology." So begins this excellent, clearly written, and readable monograph. Published in 1982, this authoritative work presents a succinct review (205 pages of text) of the current scientific knowledge pertaining to leukocyte locomotion and directional migration. The first chapter is devoted to definitions and descriptions related to leukocyte locomotion and chemotaxis and discusses fascinating visual observations of leukocyte movement. A historic overview of the study of chemotaxis is then given, followed by a lucid and wellorganized presentation of the principles of various assay systems currently used for the laboratory measurement of leukocyte locomotion and chemotaxis. Details of the methods used in the author's own laboratory are provided in the appendix. An in-depth consideration of the physiology and biochemistry of leukocyte chemotaxis, encompassing signal recognition at the cell surface, signal transduction, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Dermatology American Medical Association
