Abstract There is available no exact information in regard to the origin of the commissural fibers of the corpus callosum (Cajal,1 von Kölliker,2 Dotto and Pusateri,3 Lévi-Valensi,4 de Vries,5 Van Valkenburg,6 de Villaverde7 and Lorente de Nó8). In this investigation we have used the method of retrograde cell degeneration, which until now has rarely been employed for the study of this problem. The material consisted of the brains of dogs in which the corpus callosum had been divided or areas of the cerebral cortex extirpated, and of human brains with focal lesions of the cortex. EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS Methods. —Operations were performed with sterile precautions on dogs under morphine anesthesia. At a distance of 0.5 cm. from the midline an opening, 1 cm. in diameter, was made with a trephine. This was enlarged with forceps parallel to the midline. The breadth of the opening References 1.
