ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY To the Editor:— Referring to the editorial "Artificial Kidney" in the May 26 issue of The Journal, I would like to note that effective dialysis of the blood can also be achieved by using the living serous membranes instead of a semipermeable pipe system. I revived nephrectomized dogs in uremic coma by perfusing their abdominal cavity with Ringer's, saline or isotonic dextrose solution (Mitt. a. d. Grenzgeb. d. Med. u. Chir.39:391, 1926). During a perfusion lasting four hours, 3.968 Gm. of nonprotein nitrogen could be recovered from the perfusing fluid, whereby the protein nitrogen level in the blood of the animal dropped from 217 mg. per hundred cubic centimeters to 121.8. This procedure could be repeated and the life, of the animal thus prolonged.
