Antipsychotic Risks

Antipsychotic Risks New data suggest that typical and atypical antispsychotic medications carry a similar risk of sudden cardiac death, according to the results of a study funded by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. To assess the relative risks of atypical and typical antipsychotic drugs, scientists conducted a retrospective cohort study of Medicaid users in Tennessee (Ray WA et al. N Engl J Med. 2009;360[3]:225-235). The study included more than 44 000 users of typical antipsychotics, more than 46 000 users of atypical antipsychotics, and 186 000 matched controls. The rate of sudden cardiac death in patients taking either type of antipsychotic drug was about twice that among patients not taking these drugs and increased with higher doses. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png JAMA American Medical Association
