Abstract THERE ARE several anatomic variations in, or near, the oval window of the temporal bone of major significance to the otologic surgeon. The variants to be considered here are dehiscence of the fallopian canal adjacent to the oval window, distance of the utricle from medial surface of the stapedial footplate, and fibrous connections between the utricle and the footplate. Materials and Methods This report is based on examinations of 200 serially sectioned human temporal bones (100 pairs) in the Otological Research Laboratory of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The bones were sectioned vertically in all instances. The temporal bones were from consecutive autopsies, but some selection and deletion of prepared specimens was necessary to insure a pair of bones without significant distortion. The temporal bones were sectioned at 24μ thickness, and every tenth section stained with hematoxylin and eosin and mounted.The fallopian canal was examined microscopically along its course References 1.
