Abstract This volume summarizes the data on GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) receptors presented during the Seventh Sardinian Conference on Neuroscience, held in Domus De Maria, Sardinia, Italy, inJune 1991. This book is a comprehensive report of the most up-to-date information about the pharmacology and physiopathology of GABAA receptors in the mammalian central nervous system. The 44 chapters included in this volume are divided in different sections ranging from molecular biology to molecular and clinical pharmacology and to therapeutic approaches. One of the important findings in the pharmacology of the central GABAergic transmission has been the discovery that the GABAA ionophore-receptor complex contains specific recognition sites for several drugs with different chemical profiles and often opposite pharmacologic actions.
