Actin Filaments Abstract To the Editor. —I would like to comment on the article entitled "Actin Filaments in Diabetic Fibrovascular Preretinal Membrane" by Wallow et al that was published in the December 1981 Archives (99:2175-2181).The authors are to be congratulated on their excellent morphologic analysis of the actin filaments present in the fibroblasts of the preretinal membrane studied. However, also present in all the photographs shown were abundant bundles of collagen. The contraction of collagen is an important factor in wound healing.1,2 Weiss and Belkin3 have recently demonstrated preliminary evidence in the rabbit that inhibition of collagen cross-linking by intravitreal and systemically administered penicillamine resulted in a decrease in posttraumatic vitreous proliferation.Similar to wound healing processes elsewhere in the body, the events contributing to membrane contraction in the vitreous most likely have the following two origins: (1) cellular contraction due to the actin present in the fibroblasts and (2) References 1.
