Acoustic Nerve Tumors: Early Diagnosis and Treatment. This article is only available in the PDF format. Download the PDF to view the article, as well as its associated figures and tables. Abstract The second edition of this monograph is a very worthwhile revision. The authors have acquired 13 more years of personal experience, gathered from 82 more cases, and several new subjects and chapters have been added. Embryology, pathology (including electronmicroscopy), surgical anatomy, differential diagnosis, and postoperative management have been treated in greater detail. Special and specific audiometric tests are described and related. Neuroradiologic special studies are described and emphasized to include the importance of vertebral angiography, posterior fossa pantopaque cisternography, and polytomography. The ever expanding and important fields of microsurgery, instrumentation, and additional routes of operative exposure are all well described and discussed in reasonable detail. The addition of an author (Greenfield) attests to the close working relationship which has naturally developed between the neurosurgeon and the otolaryngologist in the evaluation and treatment of this potentially curable tumor. The emphasis upon earlier diagnosis of this tumor is stressed repeatedly.
