Abstract Mr. Slavson has chosen an unfortunate title for his book which might better be titled "A Partial Encyclopedia." I read it with the hope that the author with his vast experience in the field would carefully delineate his clinical position, particularly since in his introduction he states that the book is intended to be complete since "there are no training facilities of adequate extensive and intensive nature as yet available." Instead Mr. Slavson offers the reader a rich smorgasbord which will be of great interest to anyone interested in groups but, I think, of more value to the experienced group practitioner as a reference work and as a stimulus for careful thinking than as a textbook. He begins with a lengthy philosophical discussion of the importance and central position of groups not only in psychotherapy, but in daily living.
