A Review of the Sonometrics DBR Unit and the Binkhorst Formula Abstract To the Editor. —In the October 1981 issue of the Archives (99:1819-1823), Kenneth Hoffer, MD, published a report dealing with the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) calculation using ultrasound for axial length determination. In this report, Hoffer purported to have conducted a survey of the literature and to have performed his own studies on this subject with various ultrasonic instruments and IOL power calculation formulas. He categorically stated that "results of previous studies show that the use of another ultrasound unit (Sonometries DBR) and Binkhorst's formula is the least clinically accurate method." He further stated that he "does not recommend the use of the DBR unit and Binkhorst formula." The fact that Hoffer did not recommend the DBR or the use of the Binkhorst formula is not new. Those who are familiar with Hoffer's past differences with Sonometrics and Dr Binkhorst will recognize an old bias inherent in these References 1.
