International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements. 35 pp. Bethesda, Maryland, 1997. ISBN: 0-913394-57-2. Price: $35.00. This report is an excellent guide for the brachytherapy community. It is well organized in four sections and four appendices. Its primary achievement is its consistent description of any interstitial implant. The report is intended for radiation oncologists, therapy physicists, dosimetrists and students of radiation therapy. With the advent of computerized treatment planning systems with 3D source location capabilities and a wide array of radionuclides with different activities, the brachytherapy community has come a long way from the established classical implant systems. The main aim of this report is to develop a common method of analyzing an interstitial implant without encouraging users to depart from their normal practice. It will help many radiation oncology departments to follow this guideline and develop a protocol of their own in achieving a reasonable dose uniformity for a given implant. This report does an excellent job in defining the volumes GTV, CTV, and PTV based on general oncological principles ICRU 50 and as such making it analogous to its external beam counterpart. Following these guidelines for reporting dose will certainly help the brachytherapy field in the future, to compare results and hence relate the outcome of a treatment. Overall, this report is an important addition to brachytherapy literature and is highly recommended. Its clear presentations, simple and easy-to-follow illustrations and instructional diagrams and appendices make it useful for these reasons alone. With the addition of guidelines for interstitial implants, it becomes a welcomed and long needed work in the literature of brachytherapy and an important addition to the brachytherapy professional's bookshelf. Clearly this report should be an excellent choice for any professionals involved in the practice of brachytherapy. Reviewed by Rupak K. Das Rupak K.
