TY - JOUR AU1 - Rao, Ajay Aroor AU2 - Feneis, Jennifer AU3 - Lalonde, Chloe AU4 - Ojeda-Fournier, Haydee AB - Initially developed in 1993, the American College of Radiology Breast ImagingReporting and Data System (BI-RADS) lexicon serves to standardize breast imagingreports, improve communication with referring physicians, and provide a qualityassurance tool. The long-awaited BI-RADS fifth edition consolidates, improves, and expands the lexicon for mammography, breast ultrasonography (US), and breastmagnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The new edition has increased the number ofimaging examples to nearly 600. The breast MR imaging lexicon is significantlyexpanded since it first appeared in the fourth edition. New terms have beenadded to the US lexicon to reflect technologic advances. Minor but importantchanges have been made to the mammography section. Calcification descriptors inthe lexicon are now consolidated into two categories: benign and suspicious. Thecontroversial “intermediate concern” grouping has been eliminated, and a table in the lexicon summarizes the literature supporting therecommendation to biopsy such calcifications. New descriptors such as“developing asymmetry” are illustrated, and abstracts are providedto reference their significance. A generous guidance section is included afterthe lexicon description for each modality. Useful frequently asked questions aresuccinctly answered, and the literature to support each answer is included inthe reference section for each modality. This review article illustrates andhighlights changes to the BI-RADS lexicon and provides readers with a generaloverview to familiarize them with the fifth edition.©RSNA, 2016 TI - A Pictorial Review of Changes in the BI-RADS Fifth Edition JF - Radiographics DO - 10.1148/rg.2016150178 DA - 2016-04-15 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/radiological-society-of-north-america-inc/a-pictorial-review-of-changes-in-the-bi-rads-fifth-edition-r8d5vhypSp SP - 0 EP - 0 DP - DeepDyve
