AB - Research in the social sciences has traditionally been undertaken on the initiative of social science researchers themselves, and financed at the discretion of funding bodies such as the Social Science Research Council SSRC. The potential users of research, particularly in the management and industrial relations fields, have seldom had the academic resources at their disposal to conduct their own research projects, and usually had no formal direct relationship with outside researchers.
