The past few years have seen the publication of a number of studies tracing the reasons why the political process between Israel and the Palestine Liber- ation Organization (PLO) failed. In his book The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood (Beacon Press, ), Rashid Khalidi argues that the responsibility for the impasse reached in the negotiations for a two- state solution lies with all the players, including the Palestinian leadership. 1 He gradually leads the reader towards the idea of a one-state solution, main- taining that unless the parties involved take action this could yet become the only remaining alternative to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
