There are some small criticisms that could be made such as the lack of Chinese characters in the main text or the variation in chapter length that makes the second chapter feel very large, especially in comparison with the third chapter. This might impact the ability to parse out chapters of the book in a course, for instance. Also, footnotes at the end of each paragraph rather than each sentence makes looking for specific references cumbersome. Lastly, some of the glosses of Western material feel a bit like caricatures, but this is a common problem in trying to find the right amount of time to spend on each figure mentioned in a comparative project. These problems are only minor compared to the joy in reading Allen’s engaging, sophisticated, yet poetic prose. Aaron B. Creller Aaron B.
