TY - JOUR AU - Kottsieper, Ingo AB - I. Kottsieper, Ez 19,2 - 9 The famous text Jer 31,31 -- 34 is a promise of a new covenant in contrast to the previous one. The new covenant will not be iike the covenant which Yahweh made with the fathers of old, and which the people broke. The principal novelty of the new covenant will be in the fact that Yahweh will bring it about despite unfaithfulness on the part of the people; the motive of the new covenant will be exclusively the faithfulness of Yahweh, which means His will to forgive the iniquity of the people. A new beginning in a Situation of total failure may bring about a transformation. The people should have recognized their guilt, and after experiencing new great acts of salvation each should have come to the conclusion that Yahweh alone is his Saviour. The covenant relationship will be explicitly interpersonal. One may assume that the promise can only be fulfilled in eschatological time.
