In a recently published book, entitled Scrivere lettere. Una storia plurimille- naria, Armando Petrucci concludes his rendering of the history of the letter and letter writing by stating that the recent revival of studies on the genre implicitly means acknowledging that the end of an age has arrived. Indeed, we are losing forms of knowledge such as written literature on paper. Petrucci continues by affir- ming that the modern digital age will forever revolutionize the study of literary works, for scholars will have little or no original manuscript pages, few variants to minutely examine, and so forth. He concludes the book by writing that, in the pre- sent age, text messaging and SMS have further signified the end of the hand-written letter in that the arrival of these electronic forms of communication has impoveri- shed the letter. Armando Petrucci is a renowned paleographer and scholar of writing. He is especially known for his interdisciplinary approach towards the social and political functions of
