TY - JOUR AU1 - WOODMANSEE, JOHN J. AU2 - COOK, STUART W. AB - 3 STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED TO EXPLORE THE ORGANIZATION OF VERBAL ATTITUDE TOWARD NEGROES. CONTRARY TO WIDELY HELD ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING THE ORGANIZATION OF ATTITUDE, THE RESULTS DID NOT PRODUCE COMPONENTS IDENTIFIABLE AS COGNITIVE, AFFECTIVE, AND CONATIVE. INSTEAD, A LARGER NUMBER OF FORMAT-FREE, CONTENT-DEFINED DIMENSIONS WERE FOUND: PRIVATE RIGHTS, DEROGATORY BELIEFS, LOCAL AUTONOMY, GRADUALISM, EASE IN INTERRACIAL CONTACTS, ACCEPTANCE IN CLOSE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS, INTEGRATION-SEGREGATION POLICY, ACCEPTANCE IN STATUS-SUPERIOR RELATIONSHIPS, AND NEGRO INFERIORITY AND SUPERIORITY. IN ADDITION, 2 DIMENSIONS PREVIOUSLY DESCRIBED BY SCHUMAN AND HARDING WERE FOUND: PRO-NEGRO IRRATIONALITY AND SYMPATHETIC IDENTIFICATION WITH THE (NEGRO) UNDERDOG. VALIDITY OF THE DIMENSIONS AS MEASURES OF ATTITUDE WAS EVALUATED BY THE KNOWN-GROUPS METHOD IN 2 REGIONS: BORDER SOUTH AND WEST. THE 1ST 4 OF THE DIMENSIONS LISTED WERE AMONG THE 5 MOST EFFECTIVE IN BOTH REGIONS. A RELIABLE 100-ITEM MULTIFACTOR INVENTORY INCORPORATING THE 1ST 10 DIMENSIONS WAS DEVELOPED. (16 REF.)
