One can be sympathetic to the plight of the Arabs; one can even put all of the responsibility for their problems on the Israelis: one can excuse their own leadership for their share of responsibility, without daring to pollute language or pervert reality by calling the situation of the Arabs in any way whatsoever comparable to the Holocaust. There are no gas chambers in Israel. There is nothing whatsoever comparable to the Holocaust in their situation, and to claim that there is is an insult to language and a total distortion of the facts. And now, Alvin Rosenfeld writes with great trepidation, we may be entering a stage in which the Holocaust will not be, as we once thought it would be, a warning against inhuman behavior, but will be instead a precedent for inhuman behavior.
