TY - JOUR AB - OBITUARY Members of the German History Society will be saddened to hear of the death of Michael Hughes on 23 May 1993. After completing his undergraduate studies and graduate research at the University of London (Ph.D 1969), Hughes was appointed Lecturer in History at the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth, and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1990. His long period of relatively quiet activity in Aberystwyth culminated in the publication of a spate of well-received books within the last five years. Well known for his specialist research on the Holy Roman Empire, Law and Politics in 18th-century Germany (1988), Hughes also contributed to more general interpretations of modern German history. His book on Nationalism and Sociery-Germany 18004945 (1988) was characterized by a sceptical, iconoclastic approach to many long-current generalizations. Hughes’ capacity for clear and critical synthesis was demonstrated too in his textbook on Early Modern Germany 14774806 (1992). Hughes’ academic interests were broad, geographically as well as chronologically. Most recently, Hughes was working on Irish history (The Partition of Ireland, forthcoming) as well as engaging with new issues in twentieth-century German history. Hughes recently made a career move to LSU University College South- ampton (‘closer to Europe’, as TI - Michael Hughes (1942–93) JF - German History DO - 10.1093/gh/12.1.79 DA - 1994-01-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/oxford-university-press/michael-hughes-1942-93-zfzOfYUUBH SP - 79 EP - 79 VL - 12 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
