TY - JOUR AU - Miller, Theodore L. AB - Area array sensors operating in the visible portion of the spectrum can provide imagery suitable for real time and near real time tactical reconnaissance applications. Recent CCD sensor developments, image compression developments and developments in imaging system hardware are enabling greater volumes of imagery to be collected, stored, processed and transmitted to support tactical applications. Area array CCDs with 6000 X 6000 pixels or larger can provide synoptic coverage with good resolution. ITO clock electrode architectures enable extended spectral range and higher responsivity while real time compression permits data transfer of image files in near real time. Flight testing of evolving hardware systems is under way to demonstrate overall system capabilities. The Tier II+ visible EO camera is an example of evolving capability.
