TY - JOUR AU1 - Lunn, J.N. AB - The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland continues to demonstrate its interest in the provision of quality care in anaesthesia. Council, over the past year, considered the various responses to the Association’s recent enterprise which culminated in the report, Mortality associated with anaesthesia, and decided that further effort was justified. One criticism that required to be met was the absence of surgeons from the study so a working party was convened by the Association, including some surgeons, under the chairmanship of the then President, Professor M.D. Vickers. This group subsequently became a joint working party of the Associations of Anaesthetists and of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. A grant was made to the Association of Anaesthetists by the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust and thus the Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Deaths (CEPOD) could be planned in detail and the pilot study has just begun. A supplementary grant has also been made by the King Edward’s Hospital Fund. Anaesthetists and surgeons in three district hospitals have agreed enthusiastically to cooperate in the preliminary investigations (a few individuals have reservations and these are of course to be respected).
