An alarm clock is recommended because these clocks are usually of robust design, of suitable size and comparatively cheap. The gap between the clock face and the case should be sealed to exclude damp. A circular piece of stout paper (A) of about 18 cm diameter is pivoted at the centre on the clock spindle, and the hour hand (B) is threaded through two slots in the paper. The paper is thus concentric with the face of the clock and is rotated by the movement of the hour hand. The clock is mounted horizontally in a Meccano A wire in tipping position framework (a suitable method of attachment wire in normal position C exposed metal is by means of the back controls) with the D wheel attached paper uppermost.
