TY - JOUR AU1 - Noble, W., G. AB - Abstract The changing view of damage risk criteria for acoustic trauma from industrial noise has led to the introduction of systems that are based on prediction of the extent of hearing impairment in the population at risk. Some reasons are given why this approach represents an advance on systems which predict the average response in the population at risk. The fundamental basis of all current criteria is protection from loss of pure tone auditory acuity. The validity of this, as a measure of damage is questioned and a new method of hearing assessment is described which is considered to be more appropriate. The concept of risk, which is presently based on the audiometric “fence” principle, is also questioned. An alternative principle is suggested, which has its basis in the behaviour of people already suffering hearing handicap. This content is only available as a PDF.
