No maritime archaeological excavation has captured the imagina- tion of people more than the recovery of the Vasa. There have been several very large-scale maritime archaeological excavations in the post-Second World War period that have now substantial archaeological reports. However, it has been of some concern that the Vasa has, up until now, produced only a few small technical papers and some publications that relate more to public information rather than archaeology, so the publication is welcome. This is the first in a series (we are left a bit in the dark about how many more volumes there are to be) and it is outstanding. The report describes the history of the Vasa from the time of its construction to the present day.
