TY - JOUR AU - Arps, G. F. AB - Studied the discriminative efficiency in the perception of real differences, and analyzed various factors involved in the judgments. The apparatus consisted of a light-tight box, modified form of memory apparatus, tachistoscope, and a contact seconds pendulum which controlled the magnet of the tachistoscope. 12 variables were taken up and an interval of 2 secs separated successive presentations of the standard and variable stimuli. Three Os participated in the study. Results indicate that: (1) eye-movement appeared to play no direct role in a judgment, conscious increment of eye-movement acted as a distraction (2) the judgment of a variable as "longer' or "shorter' rested upon the absolute value of the variable, and was immediately perceived as an expansion or shrinkage of the variable; and (3) the standard, at times, varied subjectively, and the same retinal impressions permitted of ambiguous interpretation, leading to illusions.
