TY - JOUR AU - Sotoodeh, Karan AB - When an overpressure event occurs in the piping or facility, an automated on–off safety valve shuts down the system immediately. This study describes the basic function of these valves. In reviewing different literatures and identifying gaps, it has been determined that five major design aspects need to be discussed in additional detail in order to improve the safety and reliability of safety valves. These five design factors are sealing, set pressure, noise, operational loads of the safety valve on the connected piping, and sizing. A variety of design standards, such as API 520, 521, and 526, ASME Sec.VIII Div.02, and ISO, should be applied in order to apply the necessary calculations and methods. This study has two main limitations. The first is that the sizing of safety valves is done for gas services and critical flow, so a separate study is proposed to examine sizing the valves for different fluid types and operating conditions. Furthermore, a more detailed study on sealing selection based on operating temperatures and fluid types is proposed at the conclusion of the research.
