It’s big business but in many cases still isn’t taken seriously. Henry Tucker examines some reasons for this. Many people who work in IT say that the profession as a whole has an image problem. It’s perceived as being dull and the people who work in it even worse. Computer games, though seen by some in the wider IT sphere of thinking to be cool, are often seen as only one step up from reading books that have pictures in them. They are looked on as the frivolous side of the industry and at best ignored. This is a very easy stance to take but the industry is gaining a huge amount of power. Share prices in most software companies are going one way – up. Nintendo just can’t meet demand for its highly popular Wii console and its rivals’ devices, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3, are some of the most powerful personal computers available.
