TY - JOUR AU - Abramov, A. G. AB - The paper presents and systematizes the accumulated experience and some recent developments of specialists from the National Research Computer Network of Russia (NIKS) in the field of intelligent monitoring, statistics and analytics of accumulated big data on network flows. A brief review of exploited methods and software tools for miscellaneous and descriptive visualization of network flows with a special attention to detecting and highlighting communication patterns is provided. Design and implementation features of existing and proposed new hardware and software pipelines for collection, analytics and interactive visualization of large amounts of data on network flows are discussed. The developed and put into real practice software tools based on open-source solutions that meet the current level of development of the industry and their main capabilities are presented. A number of pictures as results of visualizations of network data exchange are given. The images are obtained using such demanded network visualization techniques as flow and heat maps and also an approach based on intelligent drawing and managing graphs in 3D space. Advanced methods and service solutions for visualization and deep analytics of network flows complement the set of operational tools for monitoring and managing the NIKS network, helping to increase its reliability and visibility and expand knowledge about the network, including existing problems and bottlenecks. In addition, they solve in a natural way issues specific to telecommunications networks in the field of science and education, such as identifying sustainable research collaborations and the most active users involved in intensive data exchange, especially with sectoral organizations.
