Jayewardene, is one of South Asia's most remarkable politicians. J. R. (as he is known in Sri Lanka) first entered the national legislature in 1943 and remained a major political figure right up to his retirement in 1988. His experience includes fifteen years as a Cabinet Minister, seven years as the Leader of the Opposition, and eleven years as Head of the government, both as Prime Minister and Executive President. Certainly no Sri Lanka politician of modern times can match his record for political
